When we took over the project, the shell of the building, with a ground floor and first floor, stood on a plot of around 600 m². As is typical in the country, the foundations and load-bearing pillars were built so that at least one more storey can be added.

The MedicalCare Center consists of three areas: a health station, a first-aid post and a centre for teaching, training and further education. The ground floor houses the examination and treatment room with patient reception, as well as the pharmacy and administration, a small laboratory and toilets. The first floor can accommodate staff who help out at the station on a voluntary basis for periods of time.

Construction stops and delays

Because of changes to existing laws and regulations, construction work had to be suspended at times. On the authorities’ instructions, the entrance area, terrace and balcony had to be altered and partly removed.

In addition, there were disruptions caused by political unrest and strikes. Meanwhile, prices for building materials and wages rose, in some cases dramatically, so that the budgets were used up too early.

The 2015 earthquake

On 25 April 2015 one of the strongest earthquakes of the past 80 years shook Nepal. The epicentre of the first quake, with a magnitude of 7.8, lay in the Gorkha and Tanahun regions, not far from Satrasaya. Because the building had been constructed to be as earthquake-resistant as possible according to the latest standards, the damage was limited.

The first-aid post was about to open. It was opened for the emergency care of the population. With the support of many volunteers from the surrounding villages and the partner organisations medihimal (Nepal) and help to help (Nepal), the long queues of people waiting could be looked after quickly.

Operation

The station is run in cooperation with the Nepal Red Cross Society and with hospitals in the region. We expect monthly operating and staff costs of around 1,000 euros.
