School at Taksindu Monastery
Rebuilding the monastery school after the 2015 earthquake – earthquake-resistant, with 32 rooms for two pupils each.

This project is located in eastern Nepal, in the Solu Khumbu region in the Mount Everest area. The monastery lies around 300 km east of Kathmandu, just below the Taksindu Pass at 3,031 m.
In 1941 the Sherpas of the region, most of whom had fled from nearby Tibet, asked the monk Late Khenpo Takden Tsulthrim from Tengboche Monastery to found a new monastery there. Today 54 young monks live and learn there in five year groups. The plan is to increase the number of year groups step by step to eight and the number of pupils to 100.
Why it had to be rebuilt
The earthquakes in spring 2015 caused devastating damage in the eastern regions. The monastery school was particularly badly hit. Repairing the buildings was no longer possible; they had to be demolished and rebuilt.
The Taksindu school project was launched in 2015 on the initiative of a couple from Berlin who have supported children and young people in Taksindu through sponsorships for many years.
What is being built
After consulting experts and inspecting the site, it was clear: repairs would not be enough – the reconstruction had to be earthquake-resistant.
Besides demolishing old residential buildings at risk of collapse, the project mainly involves building a new, earthquake-resistant, two-storey U-shaped “Student’s house” with 32 rooms for two pupils each. Space in the roof allows for future extension. At the same time, the “Teacher’s house” is being rebuilt. The sanitary building and laundry have already been completed thanks to donated “building blocks”.
Funding
The entire construction work, including furnishings, was originally estimated at around 150,000 euros. Because prices for materials and wages are rising in Nepal, too, the construction costs cannot be met as planned.
We fund the project exclusively through earmarked donations and project sponsorships.
